The
OMAA is the only museum in the State of
Maine devoted exclusively to the exhibition and collection of American
Art.
The Permanent Collection includes almost 1600 works of art, including
paintings, sculptures, photography
and graphics. It houses one of the largest collections of ceramic sculpture
by Carl Walters; watercolors by Eliot O’Hara; oils by Henry Strater;
and drawings and sculpture by Isabella Howland.
The
Museum is one of only two U.S. institutions possessing a complete set
of all the graphic works of Jack Levine. It also has eight Reginald Marsh
tempera and watercolor depictions of the Bowery and Coney Island; and
seven fine works by Marsden Hartley. The
OMAA collection includes a variety of works by artists associated with
the famed Ogunquit arts colony, including Edward Betts, Charles Woodbury,
Hamilton Easter Field, and Robert Laurent.
While
the museum has a superb assortment of works by Maine-related artists,
it is also recognized for the diversity of American artists represented
in its collection. Among
the artists comprising the permanent collection are: Eric Aho, Ben Aronson,
Peggy Bacon, Will Barnet, Romare Bearden, George Bellows, Thomas Hart
Benton, Charles Burchfield, Alexander Calder, Charles Demuth, John Flannagan,
Gertrude Fiske, Morris Graves, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, Robert
Henri, Edward Hopper, Peter Hurd, Wolf Kahn, Alex Katz, Rockwell Kent,
Walt Kuhn, Gaston Lachaise, Jacob Lawrence, Ernest Lawson, Roy Lichtenstein,
George Luks, Paul Manship, John Marin, Reginald Marsh, Louise Nevelson,
Arnold Newman, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Mark Tobey, Neil Welliver, Margaret
Bourke-White, Marguerite and William Zorach.
